/Filming at ASU

Arizona State University is committed to the growth of film and media-related industries in Arizona. We work together with the Arizona Film Office and the Arizona Production Association to support commercial productions that are consistent with the university's mission and identity. 

Individuals may take photographs or shoot video for their own personal use without permission from the university; however, such recordings may not subsequently be broadcast or used for commercial purposes. Please note that private recordings may be prohibited in certain locations or at select events.

Note to ASU students, faculty or staff participating in commercial nonfiction films: Please be aware that the university and ABOR policies that govern your conduct apply to images of you that are captured on film. Therefore, you may be subject to disciplinary action if you are filmed engaging in behavior that violates university policies. Please also be aware that, even if you do not engage in prohibited behavior, the resulting film may paint an unflattering portrait of you as an individual or member of a group. Please address any concerns with the appropriate ASU office and the producer of the film before agreeing to participate in a project.

  • ASU student(s) shooting a class assignment: Please email Liza Del Mundo (for classes on the Tempe and Downtown Phoenix campuses), Meg McConnaughy (for classes on the West campus), or Liza Del Mundo (for classes on the Polytechnic campus).
  • All other shoots/recordings (including, but not limited to, professional photography, advertising, commercial enterprise, motion pictures, television of all types, documentaries that do not promote ASU, public service announcements, projects for non-ASU educational enterprises, non-official music recording, recording of live events, and capturing images and/or sound for web use). 
    Note that we need at least 10 business working days to process your request. Please complete this Film/Photo/Video Shoot Application. If you are scouting only, please complete as much as you currently know about the project. If you are not scouting, please allow 10 business days for processing and approval of completed submission.
    • Comply with State of Arizona, Maricopa County, Arizona Board or Regents and ASU laws, policies, rules and/or regulations;
    • Receive permission from affected facility managers;
    • Have a valid permit or contract on site (except for news organizations);
    • Have an ASU Media Relations or Public Events staff member present (except student projects); and
    • Have insurance listing the state as an additional insured as specified in the film policy (except student projects and news organizations). Individuals and organizations who do not have an insurance policy that meets this requirement can purchase coverage for an individual shoot through the TULIP program.
